The Seminole Towne Center in Sanford, FL, closed just 30 years after it opened in 1995. The photographer had wandered the quiet, mostly-empty mall for hours, taking photos like this one before the redevelopment plans began. The contrast of the intricate concrete design with the bright blue sky and the living, swaying palm trees with their sculpted counterparts contribute to the structure feeling like a place that exists outside of time. These third space centers of commerce, in harsh sunlight and shadow, can echo a sense of community as well as unease.
Captured on 35mm film.
