Sunglow
Description
Crabby Joe’s restaurant, sitting atop the Sunglow Pier, is a Daytona Beach staple. It has been built and rebuilt multiple times — most recently, following hurricanes in 2022, with the first occurring just a month after this photo was created. The fishing pier, which can be seen in the distance beyond the boy and the bird that has grabbed his attention, no longer stands, but the landmark does.
It is a place that has always felt out of time, in the decade and a half the artist has been visiting it and enjoying their fish sandwiches. People had been doing the same for decades before her, and likely will for decades to come. The captivated look on the child’s face, sitting over the Atlantic ocean waves, says it all.
